Series: Riddle–Sheehan through Coombs–Wilson
Era: Commonwealth Bank / Reserve Bank Transition
Design Themes: King George V, King George VI, Queen Elizabeth II, pastoral industry, agriculture and national production
Denomination: One Pound – Australian Pre-Decimal Banknote
The Australian One Pound banknote was one of the most important everyday paper-money denominations of the pre-decimal era.
While the denomination has an earlier history, this Fair Market Value study focuses on the principal collector market from 1926 through to the final Reserve Bank issue of 1961. These years represent the strongest combination of collector demand, surviving population and verified market activity.
From the late Commonwealth Bank period through to the final pre-decimal issues, the One Pound note passed through major changes in design, monarch, issuing authority and collecting importance.
The 1926 and 1933 One Pound issues sit within the earlier Commonwealth Bank era and are now recognised as significant collector notes, particularly in strong original grades. Later King George VI issues carried Australia through the wartime and post-war economy, while the 1953 Queen Elizabeth II issue introduced the young Queen's portrait to Australian paper currency.
The 1961 Coombs–Wilson One Pound note became the final major pre-decimal One Pound issue before decimal currency arrived in 1966.
Although the One Pound denomination was heavily printed and widely circulated, genuinely original high-grade examples are now far less common than many collectors realise. Most surviving notes show folds, handling, teller flicks, soft corners, staining, storage issues or other signs of circulation.
This is why Fair Market Value must be driven by real condition, verified grade, prefix importance and actual collector demand — not catalogue fiction.
The Australian One Pound banknote was one of the most important everyday paper-money denominations of the pre-decimal era.
From the early 1930s through to the final Reserve Bank issue of 1961, the One Pound note passed through major changes in design, monarch, issuing authority and collecting importance.
The 1933 One Pound issue sits in the earlier Commonwealth Bank period and is now a serious collector note, particularly in strong original grade. Later King George VI issues carried Australia through the wartime and post-war economy, while the 1953 Queen Elizabeth II issue introduced the young Queen’s portrait to Australian paper currency.
The 1961 Coombs - Wilson One Pound note became the final major pre-decimal One Pound issue before decimal currency arrived in 1966.

This is why Fair Market Value must be driven by real condition, verified grade, prefix importance and actual collector demand — not catalogue fiction.

Fair Market Value for One Pound banknotes from 1933 to 1961 is highly grade-sensitive.
Lower-grade examples remain accessible to general collectors, but the market becomes much stronger from VF upward. Once a note moves into aUNC, UNC or better original condition, buyer competition increases sharply.
The strongest FMV activity is currently seen in:
A common One Pound note is not always common in the grade collectors actually want.
Grade Progression
Grade is the first and most powerful FMV driver.
A note in Fine or Very Fine condition may be affordable and collectible, but the same issue in aUNC or UNC can sit in a completely different value tier.
Collectors are increasingly paying for originality — crisp paper, strong colour, sharp corners, clean surfaces and natural eye appeal.
Prefix Importance
Prefix hierarchy matters.
First prefixes, last prefixes and scarcer prefix ranges regularly outperform ordinary middle-prefix examples.
Earlier Commonwealth Bank issues and final Reserve Bank issues also carry extra collector weight because they mark important points in Australian monetary history.
Star Replacement Notes
Star replacement notes are a separate FMV category.
They should not be compared directly with ordinary circulation notes. Genuine star notes carry specialist demand and can outperform first or last prefixes when condition and scarcity align.
Certification, Verification and Provenance
Verified & Authenticated examples trade with stronger confidence.
Collectors want to know what they are buying. Clear grading, accurate description, strong images and honest condition notes all support stronger FMV outcomes.
Provenance also matters where a note comes from a known collection, deceased estate, long-held family group, or clearly documented source.
Originality and Storage
Storage history is becoming more important.
Many One Pound notes have survived, but not all have survived well. Notes affected by foxing, teller stamps, rust marks, old album damage, trimming, pressed folds or chemical cleaning must be treated differently from naturally preserved examples.
Originality protects value.
The One Pound denomination remains one of the strongest entry points into Australian pre-decimal banknote collecting.
It appeals to:
Retail demand remains strongest for clean, attractive notes under accessible price points, but serious collectors continue to compete for high-grade examples.
The 1953 and 1961 Coombs - Wilson notes remain especially liquid in aUNC and UNC grades because they are recognisable, affordable and easier for newer collectors to understand.
Earlier 1933 to 1942 issues carry stronger historical weight and can attract more serious buyers when grade and originality are right.
Not all One Pound banknotes should be priced the same way.
A 1961 One Pound in Fine condition is a very different item from a crisp UNC example.
A 1953 first-prefix Queen Elizabeth II note is not the same as an ordinary circulated middle-prefix note.
A genuine star replacement note is not the same market as a standard circulation note.
Fair Market Value must always consider:
The catalogue may provide a reference point.
The market decides the value.
Our Fair Market Value benchmark reflects verified market activity, grade discipline, collector demand and real-world liquidity.
We do not treat catalogue values as final truth.
We use them as one reference only.
The true FMV position is built from what collectors are actually paying, what dealers are actually selling, and what properly described notes are actually achieving in the current market.
One Pound banknotes from 1933 to 1961 remain a foundation area of Australian pre-decimal collecting.
They are recognisable, historically important and highly liquid when priced correctly.
Fair Market Value delivers verified data — not catalogue fiction — giving collectors a transparent benchmark they can trust.
Closing Doctrine Line
One Pound notes are not rare because they once circulated widely.
They become important when condition, originality, prefix and collector demand meet.
Trust first. Say what you mean. Do what you say. What you see is what you get.
